 Classic Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ingredients

For the Cake:

1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar

¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1 cup (240ml) whole milk

½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup (240ml) boiling water

For the Chocolate Frosting:

1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened

3 ½ cups (450g) powdered sugar

½ cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder

½ cup (120ml) heavy cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Prepare the Cake:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch (23cm) round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper for easy removal.

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

Gradually stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin—this is normal.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare the Frosting:

In a large bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer until creamy.

Add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.

Gradually add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat on high speed for 2–3 minutes, until the frosting is light and fluffy.

Assemble the Cake:

Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread an even layer of frosting on top.

Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides. Smooth with a spatula for a clean finish.

Decorate as desired with sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or fresh fruit.

Tips:

Use high-quality cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor.

For added moisture, brush the cake layers with a sugar syrup before frosting.

Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Enjoy your homemade chocolate cake! 🍫🎂
